Ipod battery check - huh

The gist of this article on apple support page to check the condition of battery is, fully charge your iPod, play the album an album in repeat mode, note down the time you have started playing and the time when the iPods battery drains completely. The time different gives the duration for which iPod has played the album. Comparing this to the rated play time should give you an idea of your battery condition.

With a music playback time of 40 hours on my iPod touch 4g, is Apple really expecting me to keep checking the ipod to see if it is still playing? or is it expecting me to stay awake for 40 hours listening to the album in repeatedly for 40 hours?

This is what Apple wants you to do to accurately determine the battery life, may be accurate, but is it practical and wise?
