SanDisk SecureAccess - short opinion

The SanDisk SecureAccess is a small utility that comes bundled(stored on the drive) with a SandDisk pen drive. This utility can be run only from a pen drive and only on a pen drive from SanDisk. Tried copying it to hard disk, Sony pen drives and run, but it asks me to run from a SanDisk pen drive.

When this utility is run from a supported drive, it creates password protected vault on the pen drive. Files can be added or deleted from the vault through the interface. The vault is read only, so if you want to edit any of the files you will have to move it out, edit and move it back in.

Multiple vaults can be created on the drive. When the utility is started it asks for the password for an existing vault or a new vault can be added. In the windows explorer each vault is seen as a folder within "MyVaults" folder which further contains multiple files and folders. Files are stored within a subfolder files\00000000. When I checked, the file sizes are similar to the actual file sizes, but the file names are changed to 1, 2 etc and there is no file extension. So these files can not be opened as they will not be associated with any program. I even tried giving them an extension as I know what files these are, but the associated programs throw a file corrupted message. These files have to be opened from within the SecureAccess interface, of course that is the intended purpose.

Now the issues,

1. A password is needed to access the vault, but not to delete it. Yeah, when the SecureAccess is started, you can delete the vault without entering password. The utility only asks for deletion confirmation and not password. When deleting a password protected vault, I expect the utility to ask for password before deleting.

2. The vault itself or the files within vault can be deleted from normal windows explorer and you will never know that you had a vault there. So anyone having access to the drive can knowingly or unkonwingly delete vaults thinking they are a set of corrupted files.

3. If the files are deleted from windows explorer, the files still show up in the SecureAccess interface. Just the name shows up but these files can not be opened or moved out as the actual file in the vault was deleted.

Opinion

With the issues mentioned above, I can only say the SecureAccess utility is good to hide files but not to protect them. SanDisk mentions "safeguard your personal files, Protects Personal Data and Sensitive Business Files...". In reality, it doesn't protect but hides. I'd expect much more with the word "Protect", where is the protection when anyone can delete or damage the vault. The utility should have created a hidden partition that is hidden from explorer or something similar which it fails to.
