A sunglasses day? Really?

I just learnt a new thing in life.

27 Jun is "International Sunglasses Day", wow.

When I checked my mails today, there were some promotional spam as usual and what caught me was "International Sunglasses Day". Initially ignored, but later realized that some top sites are running this on their home pages.

So, I thought I'll find out more about this "International Sunglasses Day". After a quick help from ever friendly Google and eager to help Bing, the oldest article I could find was posted in 2013. So I guess it is around that time this day started.

Huawei HiLink - A battery hog

Huawei HiLink is an application from Huawei to know the status and monitor Huawei Data Cards. This is not an essential application but is a very handy app to know the status of the datacard, data balances etc. Even without the app, the details can be known using the webinterface, the HiLink app just makes it much easier.

I use a Huawei PowerFi E8231 Data Card ocassionally. During a recent vacation I used it as my main internet source and I installed the HiLink app (Android) to know the data balances and read sms easily.

YouTube December earnings - A warning of January

Its that time of the year where my YouTube earnings start going up from the usual. From my past two years of moderately active YouTube channel experience, the earnings go up by 20 to 30 percent.

Before now, I was excited to see my earnings go up because I didn't have an idea of what was to come. But this time I'm taking it with a pinch of salt. Its perhaps a warning that I should be prepared for low earnings for the next few months.

Microsoft Nokia kill Symbian services, one after the other

We all know that Symbian is dead, but there are millions of users still using symbian phones and I'm one of them.

First Nokia has stopped support/development of any new Symbian phones. Starting Jan 1, 2014, the Nokia store for Symbian was not getting any updates, meaning the store will neither get new apps nor updates to existing apps.

Now in the past one week, I've got to know that they are killing three more services.

Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP - End of Life

Finally, its time to say good bye to Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP. Three months after the Microsoft has ended support for Windows XP, my all time favourite operating system, Microsoft has now pulled off the plug for Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP.

Manage Wireless Networks in Windows 8 & 8.1

My new Thinkpad came with Windows 8 Pre-Installed and I searched for "Manage Wireless Networks" for an hour or so without any luck in locating it. In Windows 7, we have "Manage wireless networks", "Change adapter settings" and "Change advanced sharing settings" under "Network and Sharing Center". The "Manage wireless networks" option doesn't appear in Windows 8 or 8.1.

Finally after an hour of looking around, I understand that we have to travel back in time for around 15 years and work in command prompt.

YouTube to use Google+ comments

There is a new update to YouTube commenting. YouTube has made it mandatory to use Google+ for commenting on YouTube channels.

I have never used Google Plus and now I'm forced to use it if I have to reply to the visitors comments on my videos, an extra thing to manage and some extra privacy settings to be concerned off. Not the way to go Google.

Samsung developing into Android and Google into Windows

This is what is happening, isn’t it? I think so.

Samsung probably is the largest handset manufacturer of Android devices and to make the stand apart they have released their own SDK’s based on Android so that developers can develop apps that will be specific to Samsung devices. This is pretty much like a Samsung Android, though it is still Android. They already have a huge Android market share and this will give them further edge as the users will have more relevant and specific apps in addition to the normal play store apps that every one had.
