I usually do not use facebook chat and keep the chat mostly in offline mode for the little time I spend on fb. Today after a long time I was chatting with a old friend and was shocked to see a new feature in the chat. When ever I type a send a message, there is a "SEEN" text in gray displayed at the bottom of the chat box indicating that the other person has seen my message. It also displays the time at which the person has seen the message.
This means, I will always know whether my friend has seen my message yet or not, same way my friend will know whether I have seen it. Whether you have actually seen/read the message is not really necessary. It is deemed as seen the moment you bring the window/tab to the foreground even if it is for a second.
This "SEEN" feature as per me is a serious invasion of privacy and facebook should take users concern before activating such features or it should start the feature disabled asking/giving an option to the users to activate as required.
What is fb trying to prove adding this kind of stuff. This feature is not something that no one has thought of before, if this was not implemented by others, it was for a reason. I'm sure majority(or even all) will not like this feature and do not want the other person to know that they have seen their message.
Many a times we take time to respond, or avoid chatting with some for whatever reasons/circumstances and this SEEN thing spoils the relation between friends. Now you have to respond and can not escape. If you do not respond, your friends will think that you have seen the message and avoiding them. So respond and get out of fb before your friend replies.
What are your thoughts? Do you like this feature? Is there a way to disable this?
Update: Just realized that there are already so many posts by people asking to remove this feature or for an option to disable it. There is no way we can remove/disable it as of now. Absolutely ridiculous. Added to that, facebook does not have yahoo kind of stealth settings by which we can quickly appear offline/online to certain friends. To do this in fb is a tedious process.
