Wordpress creates extra image files

Do you use self hosted wordpress blog? Do you know that everytime you upload an image for use in your posts, wordpress automatically creates three extra files of the same file. These three files are small, medium and large versions of the image you upload. I noticed this today and now I understand why my hosting account shows so many files. Most hosting accounts are limited by the number of files( inodes ) you can have in your account. If you use lot of images in your posts, word press adds 3 files to each image you upload and you will soon eat up your inode limit.

Wordpress only creates the three files if your file is large. If the original image itself is small, then wordpress may only add one more small image, it will not create the medium and large images. So as far as possible, always use small or medium images so as to reduce the number of images that wordpress adds by itself.
