As the title says, "This video is unavailable because it is not approved for monetization." is the message that suddenly appeared today beside one of my video on my YouTube video manager page.
The video has been there for almost two years and has around 100k views. It was not approved for monetization, but still available for the public to watch it and I was happy with that. This video was created by me, in my voice and no music is used. I did not infringe any copyrights, yet YouTube
decided not to approve this video for monetization for reasons beyond my understanding and there is no way I could ask YouTube about that. YouTube just displays a red circle over monetization button which displays "Monetization Rejected" on hovering.
Coming to the point, "This video is unavailable because it is not approved for monetization." message appeared today, i.e., almost 2 years and 100k views with an orange triangle. This video was never approved for monetization since beginning and this message was never there. I had one more video which was not approved for monetization in the past and I deleted that video recently since it was receiving negligible views. There was no such message with that video.
The point this message is trying to make is unclear to me. It says it is unavailable, but everything looks to be as before. I initially thought the video is no more avaliable for public to watch and was a upset with that. But I logged out and also checked from other computers and the video is still available.
So what exactly does this message mean? No reasonable explanation could be found. All I can think is that this is new and YouTube is implementing some changes. The effect of the message will probably be known when the changes are completely implemented.

Update : There is another recently uploaded video in my account and YouTube asked for additional information to approve its monetization. I have sent the information two days back and waiting for
YouTube to approve it. Meanwhile, a similar message appeared besides this video as well today saying "This video is unavailable until the review process is complete". As before, the monetization button is still green with $ symbal darked out and displaying "Under review for possible monetization".
Like the other video, this video is also available for public to watch as before. I did not see any additional restrictions apart from the display of this message. What is this "unavailable" thingy?
I will post an update if I find anything conclusive on these messages.
Update : I think this is only another indicator/reminder that the video is not approved(the first one being the disabled monetization button). The message is misleading, but apart from that I could not see any difference either as channel administrator or as channel visitor. Hope this ends here.
Update : One of the visitors "rp" mentioned in the comments(on Oct 6) that these videos are not appearing in suggested videos.
Update : After 5 days, there is again a change. The message with the orange triangle is gone and now the icons besides the videos are a little different, but its a kind of relief.
The new icons can be seen above. The blue icon indicates whether the video is public or private(locked is private). The 'tick' icon in grey icon indicates published(no icon for unpublished/private). Green icon indicates the monetization status as mentioned above. There is no grey icon in the last row above as it is a private video, there is no monitization status symbol because there was a matching third party content and so Monitization Unavailable.

Same here. Hope youtube does not deactivate videos that have not been approved for monetization. That'd be really a shit.
ReplyDeleteSame with 2 of mine, and I can't remove the monetisation option because they have been marked "Monetisation Rejected", which is fine, reject it but at least give me the option to remove the monetisation and reinstate my video?
ReplyDeleteSame on my account - dozens of videos with this remark. Even the ones that have never been monetized at all! Looks like YouTube has some huge kick-up there. Also worth to note is that the videos are normally available (I tested it from 2 PCs on my side and 3 browsers)

ReplyDeleteI'm really getting sick of this, almost impossible to get in touch with YouTube and figure out for what reasons this decision has been taken.
However one difference I can see is those videos are not appearing as youtube suggestion. My analytics says that overall hit to my songs drastically reduced because of this.
ReplyDeleteOh, thats bad to know. I never digged deeper into analytics, so did not know. On the other hand, I think analytics takes two to three days to update fully. Since this message began only two days back, may be we can know more information in a day or two. Thanks for this info, I will update the post.
ReplyDeleteSame here. I seriously doubted there was a human in the loop when i presented all necessary documentation that I owned legal rights to one of my videos. The emails I got appeared to be entirely computer generated with unrelated comments and, of course, unresponsive to any request for clarification. Now these new labels are appearing. I can only hope they'll go away. But they sure look ominous.
