Solved - Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password

"Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password."

I constantly got this message while I was trying to setup pop access to my GmailAccount1 from my GmailAccount 2. Both are normal gmail accounts and not google apps accounts. I have two gmail accounts, so instead of setting up both on my tablet, I wanted to setup my GmailAccount2 to access GmailAccount1 using POP3 and be able to send and receive mail as GmailAccount1. But the above error message is constantly thrown at me no matter what settings I use.

Below is my log and finally how I could get it working. If you are in a similar situation, try this.

I want to access my GmailAccount1 from GmailAccount2

1. On the first attempt, I received an email to GmailAccount1 and all its alternate email addresses, a mail from Google with the subject "Suspicious sign-in prevented". This mail asks me to change the password if it was not me. If it was me, then it provided a link to trouble shooting process to gain access to my account. It was me, but the trouble shooting process was of no use.

2. Somewhere in my account settings(I think in the security section of accounts.google.com), my last attempt was listed under "Unusual Activity", I had the option of Yes and No here to tell google whether it was me or not. I selected Yes, it was me. Even after this, it continues to display "Unusual Activity" and "Unknown" location though the Yes and No options are no more available.

3. I still could not setup pop access even after multiple tries. Tried deselecting/selecting different options, using username with and without @gmail.com, tried using with @googlemail.com, tried pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, pop.googlemail.com, smtp.googlemail.com etc, but nothing worked.

4. Finally found this link and it worked, https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
To use this link - Sign in to GmailAccount1 and click on the above link, it displays the below message.
Now access to GmailAccount1 is enabled. Logout and login to GmailAccount2 immediately and setitup. It should work now. Note that "leave a message on the server" is not supported by gmail, so this option needs to be disabled. In turn, you can select this option within allow pop access settings of your GmailAccount1.

My understanding is that when google initially suspected unauthorized access and prevented login, it also disabled my account for third party access. It probably is also throwing a captcha(link says displayUnlockCapcha) which obviously GmailAccount2 can not verify itself or show to us. So we get the message "Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password". When the UnlockCaptcha link above is used, GmailAccount1 is temporarily allowed access for 10minutes without Captcha. So GmailAccount2 needs to be setup within this time.

  2. None of that worked for me. Here's what did:
In the security settings of your google account proper (not the gmail settings), there's an option under 'Security' to allow less secure apps to access your account. By default, this is disabled, which is correct. I enabled it, allowing less secure apps to access the account, and the sign-in process worked.

I'll leave the topic of gmail classifying its web client as a less secure app (even to itself), and the lunacy behind that for another discussion. Today, I'm just celebrating the fact that I was able to finally get this working.
